Meet our new Director of Products
Last Updated July 26, 2018
In many ways, Joe Martin isn’t new to EzTix. He’s lead our EzSites team and developed that platform from the ground up. As we looked to improve our other products, it was a no-brainer to ask him to bring his skills to the rest of EzTix.
Booking platforms are technically all code and scripts, but their true power lies in what they help facilitate: real world adventures and human connection. We convinced Joe to take a break from dreaming up a brand new EzTix experience to talk about what’s inspiring our new approach to product development.
You created the EzSites platform which has had a huge effect on the industry. What excited you about adding the entire EzTix platform to your portfolio?
I’m incredibly fortunate to work with such a passionate team here at EzTix. There’s a love that we all share for this industry as a whole, and EzTix—EzTix is our way of showing it. It’s a chance to take what we learn and craft our system to help create more real world experiences. And all of this at a time when, I think, the world needs more real-world connections. Not digital ones.
I’ve gotten a little bitter on the digital world. I want to interact with people again, not apps. I want to call a business and have a human answer, instead of needing to press 1. Being able to have some small say in the direction of the EzTix platform is an opportunity to help more businesses succeed in an industry that brings people together in the real world.
Technology moves quickly. Where do you see EzTix moving next?
One of the hidden treasures to the EzSites platform is its focus on conversions. How many times we had to ask ourselves, “what data & reports can we use to help sell more tickets?”
While selling more tickets is the purpose of EzSites, EzTix has a larger purpose.
At GFTC 2016, I was given the opportunity to present the new designs for the EzBook system. I remember people applauding when they saw the screens and I realized…this system was bigger than any website I’d designed in my previous 16 years. EzTix isn’t just about selling tickets, or processing bookings, there’s a relationship with the software. These are screens and tools that our Partners consistently use. It’s this platform that’s helping people build their dream business.
Moving forward, it’s about the experience. The role that EzTix plays in the lives of our Partners. I want to know more about that role and how we can improve this software to do more for our Partners.
You’ve now had the chance to meet many Partners and get an understanding of their businesses. What challenges do you see out there, and how can we better help?
It’s been almost 8 years since I first sat down at Bacino’s Pizza to meet with Shane from Chicago Food Planet. It was the first time I heard the words food tour. Since then, I’ve been able to watch this industry blossom.
I think we can better help by being great listeners. We’re never going to run out of challenges. There will always be something and it’s important to have a process for dealing with those challenges when they arise. The more we can listen, the better decisions we can make.
How are you changing the way we handle development and even bugs?
By learning more about the companies we respect. I’ve been a big fan of Jason Fried, CEO of Basecamp, after reading his book, watching his TED Talk, and having friends work for his company here in Chicago. I was able to attend one of Jason’s talks where he shared his team’s development process. What I loved most was a focus on the human element. An emphasis on company culture, employee happiness, planning, and communication.
At the core of the new EzTix development process — planning & communication. An in-depth understanding of every task and the resources we have available to accomplish these tasks. Shaun Thomas has done an incredible job with this as the Product Manager for EzSites and I couldn’t be more excited to have him stepping into PM for EzTix as well.
Which EzTix Partner would you love to take for coffee, and what would you like to learn from them?
James from Devour Spain. At my musician/art-school kid core is a love for great content. Devour Spain has been an incredible force with a slew of well done, hyper-local content. Videos, blogs, emails — they’re hitting it all.
What I’d love to learn is how they’re doing it all. There’s a process, a methodology to how it all works — something I’d love to be able to share. I want to figure out how they do it, then understand how we can help more Partners do exactly that.
